17 percent drop reported for French GDP in Q2

The national statistic bureau of France, INSEE, said on Wednesday that the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country has declined 17 percent in the second quarter of the current year, improving from the earlier 20 percent decline estimated in late May.

The INSEE has as well revised the GDP drop extent in the starting quarter of the year to 5.3 percent compared with a drop of 5.8 percent that was estimated earlier.

A big part of the economy in France has been shut down on the 17th of March in order to stop the spread of coronavirus across the country, the confinement measures started to ease since the 11th of May.

The most recent available indicators showed that the decline in the economic activity would have stood at 29 percent in April in comparison to a normal situation, 22 percent in May and would be at 12 percent in June, the INSEE said.
