OPINION: Democracy quarantined

(MENAFN- Newsroom Panama) Transparency and democracy are quarantined in the National Assembly. While the country faces the ravages of a global health crisis, the Credentials Committee approved in first debate the promised reforms to the Internal Regulations of the Assembly. In a blatant way, the President of the Commission, Deputy Roberto Ábrego, highlighted and ridiculed all the proposals that would bring more transparency and accountability to the Legislative Chamber and its members. The project approved by the government steamroller expands the privileges of the deputies, and maintains the opacity of their votes, and supports absenteeism from their functional tasks.
