Laos Rice markets might see rising fluctuation in the upcoming year as harvests may not meet targets in 2019.

The total yield is predicted to stand at 3.5 million tons a drop from the original target of 4.4 million tons. Increasing prices, shortages and storage problems, cause worries for both the people and the state.

Sonexay Siphandone, Lao Deputy Prime Minister, have listed some factors that negatively affected the production of rice in 2019.

He said the repair of many irrigation channels that were destroyed by floods in 2018 is still ongoing and functioning irrigation systems are not able to provide sufficient water to meet the needs of the farmers.
