Police, robbers' gun clashes in S. African


(MENAFN) On Saturday, South African police shot nine suspected robbers in Isipingo, a town sited 19 km south of Durban in the country's KwaZulu-Natal region.


The police first trapped a group of eight who were about to rob a business premise and break safes.


Provincial police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said that, "When they (suspects) saw the police officers they fired shots,"; "There was an exchange of gunfire. A total of seven suspects died at the scene and a 29-year-old suspect was arrested."


The police recovered three rifles, six weapons, explosives and breaking implements from the deceased suspects, Gwala also said "Whilst the police officers were still busy at the scene, gunshots were heard not far from the main crime scene,".


Two other suspects died shortly in a gun fight with the police and police investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
