The paediatric team at the Starcare Hospital in Barka performed surgery on the kidney of an infant that was born with a rare congenital abnormality.

The surgery was conducted by Dr Venkatesh, consultant paediatric surgeon, and his team at Starcare Barka on the six month old baby boy. The complicated procedure, called pyroplasty, was performed for clearing obstruction in the left kidney.

It was a highly demanding clinical procedure considering the severity of the condition and the young age of the patient, the hospital said. Ali (name changed) was born with a rare congenital abnormality, Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction with poor function in the left kidney.

The Ureteropelvic Junction is located where the pelvis of the kidney meets the ureter (the tube that drains urine into the bladder). Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) obstruction describes a blockage to this area.

The obstruction impedes the flow of urine down to the bladder, causing the urine to back up in the kidney. Ever since his birth, the boy had been toiling with ailments and the parents were in a state of agony.

'Accurate diagnosis comprehends the treatment plan and enhances the rate of success. In this case more than anything, it was our ability to diagnose the condition that helped us to attempt the surgery,' said Dr Venkatesh following the successful surgery of the patient.

The patient was recommended immediate surgery as the functionality of the left kidney was only 12 per cent and drastically reduced.

The medical team at Starcare immediately after consultation on the case decided to proceed with the surgery. This is the first time paediatric surgery of such a kind was performed in the private health sector in Oman.

Dr Venkatesh said that to perform the surgery on the baby a high level of skill-set and precision was required.

About 1 in 1,500 children are affected by this birth deformity worldwide. UPJ is often detected before birth but unfortunately in this case it went undiagnosed. The problem may in some case improve but in this case the functionality of the kidney was impaired calling for immediate surgery.
