Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) said in a report that the number of fires occurring in the Brazilian forests has increased 82 percent in the starting 8 months of the current year in comparison with the same time frame of the previous year.

According to the institute, 71,497 fires in forests occurred in the country in the period, increasing 39,194 from the same period of the last year.

A researcher at INPE, namely Alberto Setzer, said that the fires resulted of human activity, some accidental and some were intentional.

He was quoted saying that "Ignition is essential for a forest fire, and this central Brazil and south of the Amazon Rainforest region has been undergoing a prolonged draught; there are some places where there has not fallen a drop of rain for three months".
