Crossfire leaves 16 killed in Afghanistan

(MENAFN) A local official declared that over 16 people, with nine militants and seven security personnel among them, have died in a gunfight between Afghan security forces and the Taliban in northern Jawzjan province on Tuesday.

District governor Ghulam Sakhi Subhani confirmed that the battle broke out early Tuesday in Aqcha district when Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint on the road linking Jawzjan to neighbor Balkh province.

He alerted that if reinforcement didn't respond, militants would blast a major bridge that connects Jawzjan with Balkh and Sari Pul provinces.

Taliban militants haven't made any statements regarding the gunfight yet.
