Syria FM, ICE Chief Discuss Holding Assad Accountable

(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held a meeting with International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane on Saturday to discuss holding former President Bashar al-Assad and officials of his former regime accountable. Syrian state TV cited an unnamed Foreign Ministry source describing the session as “the first meeting of its kind” between the two sides.

The discussion focused on transitional justice and legal avenues to pursue those responsible for crimes during Assad’s rule, including the ousted leader himself. The source did not provide further details.

In September 2025, Damascus investigative judge Tawfiq al-Ali issued an in-absentia arrest warrant for Assad, signaling Syria’s intent to seek international action through Interpol. Assad, who governed Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in late 2024, ending the Baath Party’s long-standing control. A transitional administration under President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January 2025.
