Ministry installs 5,000 smart meters as initial step for full coverage in Kuwait

(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY, July 8: Ministry of Electricity and Water has launched the operation of smart meters in principle on June 19 following the installation of 5,000 meters in various areas in preparation for covering all governorates in the future, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Assistant Undersecretary for Consumer Affairs at the ministry Dr Mishaan Al-Otaibi explained that the ministry is currently working on completing the procedures for the next step following the issuance of the first tender for the supply of 300,000 smart meters, which has now been closed.

The ministry will begin installing 300,000 meters in February, and is determined to start the operation in private houses in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Governorate and in the investment sector in Salmiya and Hawally areas where the meters of the first tender will be installed.

After the first tender's meters are installed, the second tender will be issued for the supply of the same number of smart meters, which is 300,000. Therefore, the total targeted number of meters, which is 800,000, will be supplied through three tenders.

Regarding the reading mechanism, Dr Al-Otaibi said the smart meters will bring an end to the manual reading of meters, as the new meters will be automatically read from the ministry's headquarters, and the invoices will be issued and sent to the consumers on their mobile phones.
