Qatar- MME launches campaign to remove abandoned vehicles

Doha: The officials of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment yesterday began impounding over 50 abandoned cars, a couple of days after fixing warning stickers on them, at Old Airport.

The action was taken under a joint campaign to remove abandoned vehicles from public places. It began yesterday and is being implemented by the Committee for Impounding Abandoned Vehicles at the Ministry in collaboration with Doha Municipality and Mechanical Equipment Department.

A number of senior officials, including Saleh Hasan Al Kuwari, Deputy Head of the Committee for Impounding Abandoned Vehicles; Salem Hamud Al Shafi Director of Monitoring Department at Doha Municipality; Marzouq Al Mesaifir Assistant Director of Mechanical Equipment Department; Hamad Sultan Al Shahwani, Head of the Monitoring Section and Member of the Committee, participated in the campaign. 

'The warning stickers give 72 hours to the owners of abandoned vehicles to remove them, said Al Shafi adding that some vehicles are removed immediately if they found in bad condition affecting environment and beautify of the country.

He said that abandoned vehicles also hinder infrastructure development projects of the country asking people citizens and residents to cooperate with the authority in the campaign. 'The campaign is being implemented currently in Doha Municipality, said Al Shafi. He said that the campaign will continue throughout the year and informed people about it

Saleh Hasan Al Kuwari, Deputy Head of the Committee for Impounding Abandoned Vehicles, said that the motorists should park their cars in the vicinity of their houses to avoid impounding them. He said that the law stipulates a fine of QR1,000 on impounded vehicles and QR500 as transport charge.

Marzouq Al Mesaifir, Assistant Director of Mechanical Equipment Department, who is also a member of the Committee said that the Ministry of Municipality and Environment prepared a plan and provided inspectors to carry out regular campaign.

He said that the campaign will be launched throughout the country to curb the phenomenon of abandoned vehicles at public places, roadside, residential areas. He said that the campaign will continue to cover other parts of the country. 

Hamad Sultan Al Shahwani, Head of the Monitoring Section, who is also a member of the Committee said that Doha Municipality carries out a regular campaign. He said that during the campaign the officials put warning stickers on abandoned vehicles and they will be impounded within three days if owners do not remove during a given time.
