German Chancellor calls on Iran to comply with nuclear deal

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BERLIN, June 18 (KUNA) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday warned that Iran's failure to comply with the nuclear deal "will have consequences."
In a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, the German chancellor called on the Iranian leadership to abide by the agreement signed by the P5+1 group with Iran, pointing out the need for political efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis with Iran and the latest escalation in the Middle East.
Regarding the oil tanker accident, which took place last Thursday in the Gulf of Oman, Merkel stressed the need to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis that resulted from this incident, especially after the US government provided evidence of Iran's involvement in the attacks against the two carriers.
"We take these words very seriously, based on great evidence," she said, referring the evidence provided by the US.
Merkel noted that political efforts should be pursued along the lines of German Foreign Minister Haikou Mas's visit two weeks ago to Tehran, stressing that political efforts are the right way to resolve the crisis.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced on Sunday that his country would resume by the end of June uranium enrichment at a high rate if the European countries signatories to the agreement - France, Germany and Britain - continued to delay implementation.
The P5+1 group of permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany, agreed in Vienna in 2015 for what is known as Iran's nuclear deal before the US withdrawal last year. (end)
