Japanese department store sales fall in Jan.


(MENAFN) The Japan Department Stores Association said the country"s department store sales have declined by 2.9 percent in January compared to a year earlier.

The association's survey showed that the total sales volume reached USD4.45 billion in 218 stores under the operation of 79 companies.

Sales of various products like cosmetics decreased by 0.8 percent, while sales of clothing plunged by 5.2 percent.

Tax-free sales dropped for the first time in 26 months to USD236.63 million, down 7.7 percent compared to a year earlier.
