More than 4,000 Syrian refugees return to N. Syrian areas


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Jan 1 (KUNA) -- Up to 4,0574 Syrian refugees returned to regions patrolled by Turkish Army troops in the north of their country last year, the official Anadolu news agency reported on Tuesday.
Waves of Syrian refugees had flocked from various Turkish regions to the border cross of Cilvegozu where they crossed to the home country after getting clearance from the border security personnel.
Turkish Minister of Interior Suleyman Soylu declared, on December 22, return of 291,790 Syrian refugees to "the liberated areas" in Syria since early 2018.
They have returned under umbrellas of the two Turkish military operations, "the Olive Branch," and "the Euphrates Shield." The Turkish forces carried out "the Euphrates Shield" operation in August 2016 and the other offensive in January 2018 to crush hideouts of "terrorist organizations," a term used by the official media to allude to Kurdish factions.
Turkey had moved its forces into the Syrian territories at times the local Kurds appeared a stone's throw from carving out an independent Kurdish mini state. (end) rs.rk
