(MENAFN- Asia Times) Acclaimed Filipino theater actress and singer Lea Salonga is the first Filipino ever to be nominated for a Grammy Award, marking her first nomination in a career lasting 40 years.

On December 7, Salonga posted on Instagram that she and and the rest of the cast of the Broadway musical 'Once On This Island' were nominated for Best Musical Theater Album at the 2019 Grammy awards, GMA News reported.

Salonga is listed as a principal soloist on the album and plays the role of Ezrulie, Goddess of Love in the musical.

'I am officially a Grammy nominee! So thrilled to share this with my Island family,' Salonga said in her Instagram post.

Salonga bagged the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon at the age of 18. This won her Olivier and Theatre World Awards and led to her becoming the first Asian woman to win a Tony award. Salonga is also known for her roles in Disney productions, having performed as Princess Jasmine in 'Aladdin' and Fa Mulan in 'Mulan'.
