Another 109 Filipino migrant workers who were laid off from three companies in Saudi Arabia have arrived home after being repatriated from Dammam, with each given government financial compensation.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said some were among a group of 1,470 Filipinos who lost their jobs when assets of Al Azmeel Contracting and Construction Corporation were frozen by Saudi Arabia in October, GMA News reported. Others had worked at SAMAMA Operation and Management and Rakan Trading and Contracting.
All repatriated workers were given special cash assistance from OWWA upon their arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, and they will get further aid when they return to their home towns. Some of the Al Azmeel workers reportedly had not been paid for five months.
More than 500 Filipino workers retrenched by the same company were flown home from Saudi Arabia earlier this month, with 174 apparently complaining that they had outstanding wage payments.
The Philippine government has promised all laid-off workers that they will be flown home before Christmas. Authorities have also said they will provide assistance to workers in following up their wage demands.
