(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MARRAKECH, Morocco, Dec 9 (KUNA) -- The UN is to hold an international conference on migration on Monday in the city of Marrakech, western Morocco.
The event will be held in presence of Secretary General Antonio Guterres and participation of various world delegations to adopt a charter designed to secure and organize a safe migration.
The charter tends to improve international cooperation on migration as part of a joint approach aimed to enhance the general advantages of migration and counter risks and challenges faced by individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit, and destination.
The non-binding international compact is grounded in values of state sovereignty, responsibility-sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights, seeking to manage migration on best local, national, regional, and international levels.
It aims to alleviate the negative and structural factors that hinder people from obtaining a sustainable living conditions in their countries of origin, minimize risks and sources of vulnerability faced by immigrants during various stages of their migration, improve their living conditions in countries, to which they immigrated, in order to enable them to contribute to sustainable development on various levels.
According to UN's recent data, there are currently 258 million migrants globally, 50 million of whom are children. Such a large figure is expected to rise due to several factors such as globalization, growing communication via transportation and trade, in addition to continued discrimination, demographic disorder, and climate change.
The global charter, which was first agreed by UN Member States on July 13th, is the first comprehensive document to better manage international migration, address its challenges, and strengthen migrants' rights while contributing to sustainable development.
Guterres is to inaugurate the two-day intergovernmental conference in Marrakech on December 10. He will also participate in a high-level event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights along with several former High Commissioners for Human Rights.
Some 150 countries and 20 world leaders are expected to take part in the international event. (end) jn.ma
