Nigeria: Cholera outbreak claims 71 lives


(MENAFN) A World Health Organization (WHO) official declared that the fatality number of a cholera outbreak in Nigeria's northeast has reached 71.

Collins Owili, a representative of the WHO, confirmed that71 victims have died of a cholera outbreak in five areas of Yobe state.

Owili added that up to 759 cholera cases have been registered in the region in the last two months and the Nigerian government is offering treatment to eliminate the disease at no cost.

Cholera is a fatal disease sparked by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae which people catch by consuming water or food containing the bacterium.
