The rector of the Baku State University (BSU), academician Abel Maharramov met with the rector of the Indonesian University of Darussalam Gontor (UNIDA Gontor), Professor Amal Fethullah and prorector Hamid Fahmi Zarkasi, BSU said in a message on Sept. 22.

After welcoming the guests, the rector mentioned the development of the friendly and cooperative relations between Azerbaijan and Indonesia. Academician Abel Maharramov, who gave detailed information about BSU, pointed to the expansion of the university's international cooperation, including with the Indonesian universities.

Professor Amal Fethullah, in turn, having told about UNIDA Gontor's history and directions of education, spoke in favor of integration with BSU.

Teaching the Malay language at BSU was discussed during the meeting.

Malay, along with Indonesia, is the official state language in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore (though there are different varieties, such as Bahasa Indonesia in Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu/Malaysia in Malaysia).

Several hundred million people speak the language as a mother tongue, second or a foreign language.

At the end of the meeting a memorandum of understanding was signed between BSU and UNIDA Gontor, which included issues such as the exchange of teachers and students, organizing joint conferences, seminars and summer schools.

The guests got acquainted with the scientific-research centers, laboratories and museums of BSU.
