(MENAFNEditorial) NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Dozens of raccoons have died in Central Park from a viral outbreak that can cause zombie-like behavior.
The city's Health and Parks departments said the first raccoon was discovered on June 24, but 25 additional corpses were uncovered in the following days.
Of the 26 animals found, two tested positive for the canine distemper virus, which has no effect on humans but can harm unvaccinated dogs.
Officials believe all the raccoons most likely died from the virus. They warn that if New Yorkers in the park to stay away if they see a disoriented raccoon during daylight hours.
The virus can spread to unvaccinated dogs via contaminated feces and saliva.
The latest raccoon discovered was found at E. 106th Street and E. Drive on Saturday morning.
