Doha College acknowledges excellence achievers with awards
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) One of the most longstanding international schools in Qatar and a beacon of world-class education, Doha College recently celebrated its highest achieving secondary students in an awards ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel Doha. As many as 150 students, their families and teachers, all joined together to recognise their accomplishments.

With a variety of awards being presented including subject and tutor awards, it was an evening of success and achievement. Additionally, recognition was given to those students, who have shown extraordinary character aligning with Doha College values. The annual Walton community award for outstanding charitable work went to Rohin Nag, who taught mathematics, English and computer skills to children in an impoverished community in India over the past three years during summer. He said, 'Growing up in five different countries, I have been exposed to both great wealth and poverty. Working with children, who lacked basic education, I was able to truly appreciate the feeling of community and social well-being evoked by helping others. I returned to the school with a renewed focus on honing these non-academic skills and put them into practice as a digital leader, student council representative and mathematics mentor for two younger students at DC.
The outstanding student award is granted each year to the student with the highest scores in their AS examinations. Manith Adikari achieved five A grades in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and further mathematics, scoring an incredible 100% in three modules. His ‘pastures new', after leaving Doha College, will be studying mechanical engineering in the United Kingdom.
The ceremony was interspersed with performances from the awardees, who delighted their audience with poetry and musical numbers on the violin and piano. There was also an impressive snare drum solo by Jack Dillon, aged just 16 and already a known figure in the music scene of Doha.
Dr Steffen Sommer, Principal of Doha College, stated, 'We take pride in our successes which, like most things good and lasting, take a long time to develop and inculcate so it becomes a defining feature of the culture. Recent achievements at Doha College, be it in the field of the curriculum with the introduction and implementation of HPL; the introduction of BTEC, sociology and environmental science as additional courses; strengthening of the Student Council; broadening of the student voice; and exercised transparency by running parent, staff and student surveys, have all contributed to our success and allows us to celebrate on evenings such as this.
Last year, Doha College achieved the best examinations results in its history, no doubt thanks to the High-Performance Learning (HPL) approach. Doha College is one of the only eight schools in the world pioneering HPL, and is well on its way of becoming the first HPL accredited school in the world. Doha College is one of the oldest British curriculum schools in Qatar providing a world-class education for over 1,900 students between the ages of 3 and 18, who represent over 72 nationalities. In 2016, Doha College became a pioneer school for HPL.
Established in 1980, the college was originally opened to meet the demand for a British-style education, and operates on a not-for-profit basis.
