White House calls for end to offensive operations in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (KUNA) -- The US calls for an immediate end to offensive operations in Syria and urgent access for humanitarian workers and badly needed humanitarian aid, the White House said Monday.

"Syria is terrorizing hundreds of thousands of civilians with airstrikes, artillery, rockets and a looming ground attack," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said during a briefing. "The regime's use of chlorine gas as a weapon only intensifies this." Last April, at the direction of President Donald Trump, the Pentagon fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Al Shayrat airfield in Syria after reports of a deadly chemical weapons attack by the Syrian regime.

Trump "put the Assad regime on notice some time ago, and we're continuing to echo that message," Sanders said.

In terms of any specific action, "I'm not going to broadcast what we may or may not do," she said. "But I think they should absolutely take it very seriously." (end) rm.ibi
