(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Dec. 10 (Petra) --Switzerland confirmed its strong commitment to support human rights and called on its partners to join it in making the "Human Rights Day 2017" an occasion to further promote and protect these rights.
According to a press release, the Switzerland embassy in Amman Sunday said that exactly one year from today, and on 10 December 2018, Switzerland together with the international community will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which remains 70 years after its adoption, of unequivocal relevance.
Human rights are necessary for our societies, invaluable ingredients to boost peace and stability and to foster sustainable development, it said.
"Every day, the world is witnessing various, and sometimes horrendous human rights violations, it said , adding that torture and ill treatment are still regularly used worldwide. Women continue to face discrimination and violence, although being granted equal rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights." Next year on December will mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the "Declaration on Human Rights Defenders", and in recognizing the key role human rights defenders play in protecting and promoting human rights, Switzerland will continue to engage for their better protection and the strengthening of the civil society space. Marking this occasion, Switzerland calls upon the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to join it in this endeavor.
More than seventy states have signed the so-called "Appeal of June 13th", initiated under the leadership of Switzerland, to put human rights at the heart of conflict prevention. The Appeal highlights the inter-linkages between human rights and peace and security, explores the crucial contribution of human rights to strengthen conflict prevention, and advocates for maximizing the international community's engagement in this regard.
The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development provides a new reference framework for Switzerland's international cooperation. Human rights are an essential component of the agenda and its implementation, especially with regard to the promotion of peaceful, just and inclusive societies (SDG16).
Geneva plays a major role in the development of international human rights and humanitarian norms and standards, it said, adding that it offers multiple platforms for exchange between key actors in international human rights governance.
