AMMAN —AlGhad— Police sources have confirmed to AlGhad that a number of officers with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been placed under arrest, by order of Police Director Lt Gen Ahmad Faqih, for excessive use of violence against Maths Prof Mohammad Thiabat, 63, at a restaurant in Irbid.

The camera footage of the assault from the restaurant was leaked, circulating Social Media, raised a lot of attention.

According to Thiabat, the CID personnel walked in on him while meeting with someone to discuss a financial dispute, and starting beating him without introducing themselves.

They did not show a badge, or say anything, Thiabat told AlGhad. 'They came in swinging at me and my company without as much as touching the others, he said.

After beating him in public, they dragged him and tossed him into the back of their vehicle, and drove him up to the precinct, he said. They locked him in the interrogation room while some of them took turns beating him, after they broke his phone.

This was all to scare Thiabat into reconciling with the other party at court, he explained, to settle an JOD83 thousand financial dispute.

As for the police, they claim to have received a report on an attempted extortion Wednesday night.

Someone told the police they were being extorted into signing an JOD84 thousand banknote.

Police say they headed to the reported location, and when they tried to arrest the defendants, violence 'happened.

Later on, it turned out the two main parties of the dispute were business partners at one point, whose partnership went wrong.

The two cases are being investigated separately, the case of excessive violence against the 63-year old professor, and the extortion case for JOD84 thousand.
