Kuwait- Indians, Egyptians Form Bulk Of Workers In Country: Report


(MENAFN- Arab Times) A total of 330,000 expatriates are registered under 5,500 government contracts while the Government Contracts Department at the Public Authority for Manpower is currently making adjustments in the status of 19,000 foreign workers under the terminated government contracts, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting Director of the department Nasser Al-Suheil. Al-Suheil disclosed the department issued 64,000 new work permits this year, indicating that Indians and Egyptians constitute a huge percentage of the expatriate workforce in the country. He added the recruitment of Nepalese workers requires approval of the Interior Ministry.

In another development, he said the department renews files of BOT contracts every five years and they are considered long-term contracts.

On the repetitive malfunctioning of the electronic system in the department, Al-Suheil admitted this led to delays in the work procedures He also affirmed that the department is keen on addressing the problems of big companies through a series of meetings with their representatives.

Meanwhile, the latest statistical report from the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI) revealed that most youths seem reluctant to get married despite living in a society which does not face financial problems and believes in the sanctity of marriage, reports Al-Qabas daily.

According to the report, the number of bachelors in Kuwait reached 1,269,778 while the number of married couples totaled 1,893,644. On the other hand, the number of divorcees reached 76,755 and 38,854 are widows/widowers whereas the marital status of 28,437 is unidentified.

The report showed that the number of married Kuwaiti women reached 231,360; 489,616 Arabs; 15,579 Asians; 200 Africans; 695 Europeans; 1,518 North Americans; 169 South Americans and 146 Australians.

In another development, Arab Contractors company won a KD 169 million contract to execute and improve Al-Nuwaiseeb road project, Assistant Undersecretary of roads department at the Ministry of Public Works announced on Sunday. Engineer Ahmad Al-Hassan told the press that the project includes nine multi-level intersections and a detour bridge on this six-lane road. He added that working on this 37- kilometer road will start by the end of this year and will be completed after three years. He pointed out that the ministry is working on improving the country's main roads and building newer ones to connect new residential areas. And, the Ahmadi Public Prosecutor has ordered reclassification of a report about sending pornographic pictures for provocation, reports Al-Anba daily. Security sources explained the case started with a report filed by a bearded Egyptian who said that he was surprised to find pornographic pictures sent to his mobile phone which he purchased recently. He found out the sender is also an Egyptian working at a restaurant, so he filed a case that is classified by the prosecution as 'felony extortion'.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Regulation Unit in Hawally Traffic Department recently carried out an intensified traffic campaign, supervised by acting Director of the department Hamad Al- Marri, reports Al-Shahed daily. The campaign led to the issuance of 1,345 citations for various violations such as using mobile phones by hand while driving, failure to use the seat belt and expired car documents. This is in addition to the impounding of 23 vehicles.
