President Barack Obama said Friday that the U.S. does not want to "jump through a whole bunch of hoops," to reach a nuclear deal with Iran.
Obama spoke during a joint press conference following an Oval Office meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the White House.
Asked if the White House would rule out lifting sanctions as part of a deal to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, Obama was cautious in his response. "I don't want to get out ahead of John Kerry and my negotiators in terms of how to craft this," he said. "There are a lot of different mechanisms and ways to do that."
"It will require some creative negotiations by John Kerry and others."
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani said last week that all sanctions on Iran should be lifted as soon as a final agreement is reached.
But a Senate committee unanimously approved a compromise bill on Tuesday that will give Congress more say on a final agreement with Iran.
Secretary of State Kerry has said sanctions on Iran would be gradually lifted.
Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers reached a framework deal April 2 on Iran's nuclear activities ahead of a June 30 deadline for a final agreement.
