GCC holds workshop on radioactive pollution

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The GCC crisis management center will hold a training workshop on radioactive pollution tomorrow, chairman of the center Dr. Adnan Al-Tamimi announced on Sunday evening.

The three-day event will simulate a radioactive accident at a water desalination plant; it is part of the nuclear strategy of the center, approved by the recent GCC ministerial meeting in Doha, Dr. Al-Tamimi told KUNA.

"The workshop will gather experts and specialists in radioactivity from the GCC member states, representatives of the GCC Secretariat and two nuclear inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," he disclosed.

A Canadian company developed the GCC nuclear strategy and will supervise the workshop, he added.

Dr. Al-Tamimi appreciated the efforts of Kuwait's Foreign Ministry to facilitate the holding of the workshop.

On the agenda of the event he said the Canadian company will offer the participants in the first day a presentation on the drill and its objectives.

"In the second day the participants will divide into four groups to train the scenario of safety measures a water plant should take in case of a radioactive contamination.

"The third day will see the announcement of the final recommendations and a general assessment, by the IAEA experts of the workshop," he added.

The center was founded by a decision of the 103rd session of the GCC Ministerial Council, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in July, 2007, with a view to enhancing the preparedness of the GCC countries to address any nuclear emergency in the region.

The Kuwait-based center serves as a modern radioactive early warning mechanism and a seismological and meteorological observatory.
