IEC announces initial list of district council candidates

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday announced the initial list of possible candidates in the district council elections, rejecting nomination papers of 71 including nine women.

The disqualified nominees belong to Badakhshan, Baghlan, Balkh, Bamyan, Paktia, Panjsher, Parwan, Jawzjan, Kabul, Kunduz, Laghman, Nimroz and Herat provinces.

They were dropped from the initial list for using €˜repeated support cards€™, support cards out of zone and problems in their documents.

Abdul Baday Sayyad, IEC chief, told a press conference here: €œOf 6,152 nominees for district council elections, 6,081 have found their way to the initial list.€

He said the candidate registration process had been completed in 368 districts out of 387 across the country. Not even a single woman is contesting the elections from 120 districts while no one from 42 districts has registered in this process, he added.

Sayyad did not provide details about districts where no one could register as candidate in the Oct 20 district council elections.

The IEC chief said many problems concerning the district council elections remained unclear like security, facilities, experience, law enforcement, procedure for district council elections, offices and salaries of district council members.

To a question about Ghazni province€™s division into three electoral districts, he said: €œThree major ethnic groups including Pashtun, Tajik and Hazara live in Ghazni province and that is the reason we divided this province into three zones so no tribe is deprived of their right.€

About demands of political parties, he said: €œThe IEC has provided an election law for all people including political parties, if political parties reach an agreement with the government and change the law, then we can move according to that law.€
