Afghanistan sees record numbers of civilian casualties: UN

(MENAFN) Afghanistan was unveiled in a UN report to have hit a new high number of civilian casualties during the first six months this year.

The war-torn country has seen 5,122 confirmed civilian casualties, 1,692 deaths and 3,430 injured, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

The figures indicate the highest in the first half of the year since it began documenting civilian casualties in 2009.

It comes even after the Afghan government and Taliban agreed on an unprecedented three-day holiday cease-fire.

UN secretary-general's special representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto said "the brief cease-fire demonstrated that the fighting can be stopped and that Afghan civilians no longer need to bear the brunt of the war."
