Yemen pronounces Socotra as disaster area after cyclone


(MENAFN) The Yemeni government was confirmed to have announced the archipelago province of Socotra as a disaster area following the tropical cyclone Makunu.

"Socotra is suffering from human losses and material damages," Yemeni Government Official Spokesman Rajih Badi noted.

The spokesman added that the island "needs urgent assistance including rescue and shelter to help citizens trapped in their villages or those living in the mountains."

The UN was also asked by Yemen's Minister of local administration Abdulraqeeb Fatah to provide medical and relief teams to the damaged island.
