Iraq: US set to build Consulate building in Erbil

(MENAFN) On Monday, US ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman announced the establishment of a new Consulate building in Erbil in cooperation with Kurdistan Region (KRG), Bas News reported.

"The building will be a tangible sign to the continuing commitment of the US to engage with and assist the KRG and its people to build a strong region, within a unified, democratic, and prosperous Iraq," the US envoy was quoted by Kurdistan 24 during a press conference in Erbil where the Consul General in Erbil, Ken Gross was attending, as well.

Silliman further noted that the new building shows the US's support for the Kurdish people as they are working on building a brighter further for themselves.

Kurdistan Region PM Barzani, in return welcomed the construction of the new Consulate, hoping that the US will stay as a permanent strategic friend to the region.

He said that ties between the US and Kurdistan Region have started to develop "within the framework of a federal Iraq," reiterating that the relations have been strong for decades.
