Alibaba Cloud is stepping up its efforts in emerging Asia, announcing on Thursday that its first data center in Jakarta has already commenced operations. The company is looking to position itself to beat out US rivals such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google to capture the region's fast-growing tech market.
"We are the first global player that has a local data center in Indonesia," Raymond Ma, Alibaba Cloud's general manager for ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand, was quoted by Nikkei Asian Review as saying. "From the latency and service quality perspective, we are probably better than vendors who have data centers outside of this country."
Alibaba's cloud business is still playing catchup with its US counterparts, but is growing fast. The unit reported a 104% year-on-year increase in cloud computing revenue in the fourth quarter of last year. The company has data centers in 18 regions, having recently opened new locations in India and Malaysia.
