US Vice President meeting with North Korea pulled out

(MENAFN) US authorities declared North Korea to have abruptly cancelled a meeting with Vice President Mike Pence that was supposed to take place a week ago at the Olympics.

The Vice President was set for a meeting with Kim Yo-jong, North Korean president' sister, along with other figures, marking the first official contact among the trump administration and North Korea.

He "was ready to take this opportunity to drive home the necessity of North Korea abandoning its illicit ballistic missile and nuclear programs" the moment the "possibility arose" of talks to be carried out with the North Korean delegation, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert explained.

In a statement, the spokeswoman also declared that "at the last minute, DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] officials decided not to go forward with the meeting. We regret their failure to seize this opportunity."
