Investigation ordered into public beating of Takhar woman
(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) TALOQAN (Pajhwok): The governor and other local officials of northern Takhar province have been ordered to investigate a kangaroo court verdict against a woman there.
A video clip, in which a woman is publicly beaten with sticks in the Chah Aab district of the province, went viral in social media two days back.
The burqa-clad woman is canned by two persons, with a crowd watching the scene. Sarajuddin, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News the woman was resident of Rubat village.
"The woman was beaten in full public glare by her maternal uncle named Faiz on the charge of having illicit relations with a man,€ the inhabitant claimed.
He added Hazrat Ali, the man who allegedly had illicit relations with the woman, was also publicly punished. However, the video released in social media showed the woman only.
Sunatullah Timori, the governor€™s spokesman, also confirmed the incident and said the woman had been produced before the kangaroo court by her own relatives.
The incident happened in December 2017 but no one had so far complained about it so far, he said, adding a delegation would be sent to the area soon for investigations.
The video has sparked off anger among government circles. The Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) asked Takhar officials to investigate the issue thoroughly.
In a statement, IDLG head Abdul Matin Bek said: €œThe local administration is responsible for following the court ruling and bringing the perpetrators to justice.€
Rubat is located 25 kilometers from the Chah Aab district centre. The unstable town shares a border with the Shahar-i-Buzurg district of northeastern Badakhshan province.
