KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of Wolesi Jirga members on Saturday blamed €˜nepotistic appointments€™ in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) behind widespread corruption within the ministry and insecurity in the country.
Musa Khan Nasrat, who represents western Farah province in the lower house, told today€™s session the police strength in his province was far less than required.
He accused local security officials of failing to ensure security in the province.
According to him, €˜imaginary police€™ still existed in the force whose monthly salaries were pocketed by certain individuals.
He without going into details said appointments made through orders and relations in an unprofessional way at the MoI had resulted in worsening of the security situation in many provinces.
Obaidullah Barakzai, a lawmaker from central Uruzgan province, said despite the new interior minister€™s takeover many issues remained the ministry€™s hiring process. €œIneligible€ individuals were being employed instead of suitable people, he added.
€œThe MoI has sent a corrupt and idle commander to Uruzgan with whose arrival the security situation in our province has worsened and insurgents are even able to reach near the governor€™s house.€
€œFuel and ration for police continued to be stolen and corruption has reached its zenith in the Uruzgan police headquarters.€
He claimed professional officers who had performed well were left sitting at home and were being replaced by unprofessional individual. €œThis kind of situation directly results in deterioration of the security situation.€
Wolesi Jirga speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi expressed similar views, saying merit was not considered in appointments at the MoI, a process against the country€™s law and situation.
€œWe want the MoI to pay heed to eligibility during hiring process and appoint professionals in order fundamental changes are brought to the security situation.€
There has been so far no reaction from the MoI about the allegations of the Wolesi Jirga members.
However, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak had earlier said that the reform process in his ministry was being pursued seriously.
This comes as President Ashraf Ghani last week urged lawmakers not to visit ministries for trying to get appointed their own individuals, saying whoever did this, it should be recorded through cameras and then aired on TV channels.
The President also said outdated administrational structures within the Ministry of Interior (MoI) were problematic and emphasized he supported reforms in the ministry to further people€™s confidence in police.
