Jordan King urges int'l consensus on Jerusalem to be drawn on

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, Jan 6 (KUNA) -- Jordanian King Abdullah II said Saturday it is necessary for Arab countries to build on international consensus regarding the legal status of Jerusalem.

The Jordanian king made the remark during an Arab ministerial team tasked with monitoring the reflections of a recent US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the US embassy to the holy city.

He stressed that more concerted efforts need to be exerted by Arab countries with a view to throwing much weight behind Palestinian people's struggle to safeguard their historic and legal rights in Jerusalem, as well as their endeavor to have their own independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

He went on saying that the cause of Jerusalem should be resolved in the context of a final settlement and a permanent peace deal between Palestinians and Israelis, based on the two-state solution and pursuant to relevant UN resolutions and Arab Peace Initiative.

The Arab ministerial team consists of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and UAE and Arab League's Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit.

The group was set up by the Arab League in December in the aftermath of the US president's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. (end) ab.mt
