More than 30,000 workers, 11 main contractors and 900 safety supervisors are part of Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) project.

The (MDD) is a pioneering project developed to revive an old commercial centre of Doha. It is a new smart city and the first sustainable project in the world developed at a cost of around $5.5bn.

The work of the project started in 2000 and it has reached its last and fourth phase while the three phases are under the final test and check-up.

The project is spreading over 319,200 square metres and consists of 100 commercial, and residential buildings, 5-star hotels, 800 housing units, medical office building containing clinical, administrative spaces and four various museums.

It also includes underground parking for around 10,000 cars, also the visitors to the city can identify the location of their cars in the parking through an application on their mobiles, said Abdulla Hassan Al Mehshadi, CEO of Msheireb Properties while speaking to Al Jazeera.

'We have chosen Msheireb because it is at the centre of Doha and need to be developed, but what makes it different is the architecture and the urban planning. Seven percent of the project's energy will come from renewable ‘solar energy', he added. There is a tram service linking the parts of the Msheireb in 18 minutes, and the Msheireb project will also offer residents and tenants access to Msheireb station, the largest Doha Metro station, which marks the junction of Qatar Rail's three metro lines, the Red, Green and Golden.

To follow safety measures during the work of the project, nine hundred safety supervisors were employed to train workers on the safety measures before the starting of the project.

The development of this project aims to build sustainable and innovative initiatives that enrich communities and individual lives, promote environment friendly living and rediscover and implement heritage and culture.
