Tillerson: Myanmar violence declared as 'ethnic cleansing'

(MENAFN) Growing pressure on the US government to execute new penalties on Myanmar, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday labeled brutality against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as "ethnic cleansing."

Tillerson released a statement pledging that those who are liable for the violence won't get away with it; he also cautioned that the United States might track that liability using targeted sanctions.

In the statement, he said "these abuses by some among the Burmese military, security forces, and local vigilantes have caused tremendous suffering and forced hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children to flee their homes in Burma to seek refuge in Bangladesh."

Tillerson continued "after a careful and thorough analysis of available facts, it is clear that the situation in northern Rakhine state constitutes ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya."
