(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, April 26 (KUNA) -- The European Union granted asylum to 710,400 people in 2016, more than double the number of 2015, said the EU statistical office Eurostat Wednesday.
The largest group of asylum seekers in the EU in 2016 remained citizens of Syria (405,600 persons), followed by citizens of Iraq (65,800), and those of Afghanistan (61,800).
Of the 405,600 Syrians granted asylum, more than 70 percent were recorded in Germany (294,700). (end) nk.gta
