KUWAIT CITY, March 28, (KUNA): Some 1,000 Kuwaiti students and sports clubs' members have been subjected to five months of rigorous training in various games. The activity is as part of a major sports scheme, bonding the Public Authority for Sports (PAS) and the Ministry of Education.

These junior champions, selected from among 20,000 students and clubs' members, were the third batch of physically qualified young citizens who participated in the phased project, bringing the total number of welltrained athletes to 3,000, including those who were trained in the two previous rounds. This athletic program has become 'a tributary for the Kuwaiti sports,' said Dr Humoud Flaiteh, PAS General- Director in a statement to journalists on sidelines of the conclusion ceremony for the latest round of junior champions' training, held at Kazma Sports Club headquarters.

Indicating that the effort is basically aimed at making schools' athletes 'stars of the sports clubs in the coming years,' Dr Flaiteh has expressed hope that some 10,000 players will be involved in the training program in the coming five years. Mahmoud Abul, the project director, said some 10,000 players were involved in the last round of training; representing 16 clubs and 22 schools. The activity includes table tennis, athletics, volleyball, basketball, karate, taekwondo and fencing. This is the third batch, presented by the training centers' project, for the Kuwaiti sports, thus the total number of graduates in three years has exceeded 3,000, representing a broad and excellent base for the Kuwaiti sports in all games, Abul added.
