President of the Republic of Ecuador Raphael Correa delivered a speech during the opening ceremony attended by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, as well as presidents, ministers and delegations from 193 countries.

The UAE ambassador delivered a number of lectures at various sessions and workshops covered by the conference.

Habitat III aimed to reinvigorate the global commitment to sustainable urban development with a "New Urban Agenda." It also assessed progress on the recommendations made at Habitat II in Istanbul in 1996, a conference that represented a significant landmark for the international municipal movement.
