Youth Constitutes 30 percent of Omani population

A study entitled 'The Youth in Lines' issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) demonstrated that the youth in the age group of 1529 years constitute 30% of the total Omani population.

The study showed that the percentage of male and female Omanis recorded in the Sultanate is almost equal with a slight increase in the percentage of males. It also demonstrated that the percentage of male young people reached 51% compared to 49% of female young people. The study also indicated that the total number of Omani population reached 2.4 million persons in the middle of 2015 with a 3.73% increase compared to the figures recorded in 2014.

The percentage of young people working at the governmental sector reached about one quarter of the total number of employees at this sector in 2014 with a job satisfaction level of 89% in 2015. The study indicated that 96% of the youth working at the governmental sector enjoy job security. The male young people hold equal positions in this sector with the females with 50% each.

The percentage of young people working in the private sector reached about 43% only out of the total Omanis working in this sector with a job satisfaction level of 64% recorded in 2014 and 2015. The statistics showed that 77% of those young employees enjoy job security.

With regard to the educational situation of young people in the Sultanate the study stated that there are 8 out of every ten persons enrolled in the grades 1012 for the academic year 2013/2014. The study indicated also that the total enrollment percentage for the 1012 grades in the governmental and private schools reached 95.6%.

With regard to the higher education institutions' students the study showed that most of the new students and the youth who study at the governmental and private higher education institutions for the academic year 2013/2014 fall under the age group from 1829 year constituting 92% of the total higher education institutions' students. The young students who were graduated from the governmental and private higher education institutions reached about 87% of the total graduates.

With regard to dealing with the information technologies the age group from 2024 years recorded the highest percentage of using the internet with 88%. The study showed that half of those persons use the internet to send and receive e-mails.

The Omani youth participates effectively in the charity and volunteer works. The study showed that 6 out of every 10 persons in the age group from 1829 year have donated for a charity work and that 4 out of every 10 persons have taken part in a volunteer work.

Regarding the health status of the Omani youth the study indicated that the Omani youth with diabetes in the age group form 1529 years reached about 7% of the total persons who suffer from diabetes in the year 2014. It showed that the male youth who suffer from this disease outnumber the female youth with 55% compared to 45%.

The study stated that 87% of the Omani youth covered by the survey practiced sports for three months before the survey including 53% males and 47% females.
