UNSC calls for "urgent" consultations on Yemen


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN Security Council Friday called its members for an urgent closed consultations on Yemen at the request of Russia.

Lithuania, that took over the presidency of the Council for May, led the closed-door consultations, and the Undersecretary General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman is scheduled to brief the Council members at 1:00 p.m. (New York time).

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday that he was gravely concerned about the "continued ground fighting and aerial bombardment in Yemen and its impact on innocent civilians." A statement released by his spokesman, confirming that more than 1,200 people have been killed and 300,000 have fled their homes in the past six weeks.

There are credible reports of families in Aden trapped by the bombardment and snipers targeting civilians in the street, said the statement.

It added that "attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, humanitarian warehouses and UN compounds, are unacceptable and in violation of international humanitarian law." (end)
