(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar's boxing hero Huzam Nabah yesterday out-punched inexperienced Fahad Al Thani to win the welterweight gold on the concluding day at Doha Open Championships and then quickly turned his attention to this year's Asian Games in Incheon.
Huzam, the 2006 bronze medallist at the Doha Asian Games, forced Fahad into a corner before unleashing well-timed hooks to seal his 3-0 win at Qatar Sports Club Indoor Hall where the two-day event came to an end.
"He is a good fighter," Huzam said modestly after his one-side fight in the 69kg class. "But he gave me good preparation ahead of my next assignment," the Qatari added.
"I shall be competing in a far more tougher event in Belarus at the beginning of June. I am keen to do well there because that would be my final big event before this year's Asian Games in September," the 33-year-old added. "I want to win the gold at the Asian Games. I am preparing for that. I shall be going away on a 20-day training came after Ramadan," he said.
"Fahad is a talented boxer but he needs more fights. He will become better," Huzab said.
When asked about his friendship with Fahad, Huzam said: "Yes, we are very good friends. But when we go inside the ring, we are not friends. But I am want him to go for more fights because he loves boxing."
Fahad said: "I want to learn more. This was a tough fight. I will continue to work hard and get more experience."
In another bout yesterday, Azedine Alouafi played the waiting game to score a points win over Karem Alghanem in the super heavy class reserved for boxers above 91kgs.
In the heavy class (91kgs), Elsaey Amir Ashraf won a technical knockout (TKO) over Ahmed Hassan Ali to pick up the gold.
In a rather surprise result, Hakan Nornureyddin emerged winner over the well-built Sunday Clement in the light heavy class (81kgs).
In the 75kgs class, Hadi Al Tom exhibited brutal punching power to outshine Hazem Nabah, managing a 3-0 card.
Minutes earlier, Mohammed Al Tom showed experience matters in boxing when he produced a points win over Aderogba Adebayo Tunde in the light welterweight class (64kgs).
In the 60kgs class, Abdelfateh Nafil beat Abdullatef Mohamed Sadiq while in the bantam class, Molla Getachew produced his second successive win in as many days by hammering Nabiyyou Ali Mohamed. The day's proceedings started with Yahya Saleh scoring a 2-1 card win over Gebresselasy Asefa.
Yousuf Ali Al Kazim, President, Qatar Boxing Federation (QBF), gave away the medals to the winners.
Al Kazim said:"We want to thank Qatar Sports Club management for allowing us to host this event. It was a fantastic event."
The QBF president added: "We are already planning to host another event of this kind, maybe outdoors. But that event will be staged in winter when the weather is pleasant."
He also appreciated the enthusiasm of boxers.
"This has been a successful event. We are delighted with the response from the participants," he said.
