US Inflation Surges to Highest Level Since 2023

(MENAFN) Annual inflation in the United States accelerated for a third straight month in May, reaching its highest level in more than three years, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The consumer inflation rate climbed to 4.2% in May 2026, up from 3.8% in April and marking the strongest annual increase since April 2023.

Price pressures were led by energy costs, which recorded a sharp 23.5% year-on-year increase. Food prices also moved higher, with annual food inflation standing at 3.1%.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.5% in May. While inflation continued to increase, the monthly pace slowed slightly from the 0.6% rise recorded in April.

The latest figures underscore persistent inflationary pressures in the US economy, with rising energy costs remaining a key driver behind the overall increase in consumer prices.
