Florida Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI Over ChatGPT Safety Concerns
(MENAFN) Florida has become the first US state to file a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company OpenAI, accusing the firm of releasing ChatGPT despite known safety risks and alleging that the chatbot has contributed to a range of harms, according to reports.
According to reports, the lawsuit was filed on Monday by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and claims that ChatGPT was involved in enabling dangerous behaviors, including assisting mass shooters, encouraging self-harm, promoting suicide, reducing critical thinking abilities, and contributing to addiction among minors.
The filing argues that these alleged harms are linked to what it describes as OpenAI’s pursuit of dominance in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry.
“This litany of harms is driven by Defendants’ insatiable quest to win the AI arms race and amass large fortunes, despite knowing the danger of ChatGPT,” the lawsuit states.
According to reports, the complaint also names OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, alleging that he permitted the release of the chatbot despite awareness of potential safety concerns.
The legal action follows an earlier criminal investigation launched in April by the Florida attorney general’s office, which examined whether ChatGPT played any role in a shooting incident at Florida State University last year.
