Jewish Heirs Call For Restitution On Cézanne, And More: Morning Links
A watercolor by Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) that recently appeared in a Fondation Beyeler exhibition is now at the center of a restitution dispute. Heirs of Jewish collector Gustav Schweitzer say the 1888 work, a view of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, was lost as a result of Nazi persecution. Their case, reported by a provenance researcher, adds another layer to the long and often incomplete history of works displaced in the 20th century.
According to researcher Willi Korte, documents in Swiss public archives support the family's claim. What remains unresolved is how the watercolor left Schweitzer's possession. Korte has argued that the foundation should withhold the work from the unnamed private owners who lent it to the exhibition, calling that a historical obligation. He said the painting was either sold under duress after Schweitzer fled Germany or looted in Nazi-occupied territory.
The Fondation Beyeler responded that, as a matter of principle, a Swiss museum has no authority to retain artworks without an appropriate legal basis. The institution also said that, beyond researching its own collection and checking international databases, it has far less room to investigate privately owned works. The lender, it said, will be informed of the suspicion that has been raised.
The dispute arrives as museums continue to face pressure to scrutinize provenance more aggressively, especially when loans involve works with possible wartime gaps in ownership. Even when a work is displayed briefly, the questions attached to it can outlast the exhibition itself.
The same roundup also noted Kalshi's new category for art-auction predictions, a residency program in Menorca from Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian, and Diana Thater's forthcoming outdoor video installation near LACMA's David Geffen Galleries.
