$102 Million Louvre Heist Is Getting The Film Treatment

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Louvre Heist Film Takes Shape as Romain Gavras Signs On

A feature film about last October's Louvre robbery is moving forward, with Paris-based production company Iconoclast acquiring the rights to A Grab at the Louvre and French director Romain Gavras (b. 1977) attached to direct. The project is expected to focus on the theft that stunned Paris: two thieves made off with eight historic jewels from the museum in under eight minutes, in a crime later valued at EUR 88 million ($102 million).

The screenplay has not yet been cast, and those details remain under wraps. Gavras, however, brings a high-profile résumé to the project. He directed the music videos for MIA's“Bad Girls” and JAY Z and Kanye West's“No Church in the Wild,” and last year he released the adventure comedy Sacrifice, starring Anya Taylor-Joy.

The film is based on A Grab at the Louvre, a 224-page book published today by Jean-Michel Décugis, Jérémie Pham-Le, and Nicolas Torrent. Décugis writes for Le Parisien, Pham-Le for Le Monde, and Torrent for Paris Match. According to publisher Flammarion, the authors drew on“secret documents, explosive reports, and sources with intimate knowledge of the case,” giving them access to material that has not previously been made public.

The book is not the only adaptation in motion. Reports say an anonymous British producer is also developing a documentary series based on the same title, though no further details have been announced.

The Louvre robbery has already generated a small screen afterlife. CNN released The Heist: The Louvre's Stolen Crown Jewels one week after the incident, and Discovery Channel followed with Louvre Heist: Minute by Minute a month later. Together, those projects suggest that the case has become more than a criminal investigation; it is now a media event, one that continues to expose the museum's vulnerability while the stolen jewels remain missing.

For now, authorities are still pursuing the case. If the feature reaches theaters in 2028, as Vogue Adria has reported, it will arrive into a story that is still unfolding in real time.
