USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group Arrives in Caribbean
(MENAFN) The U.S. military confirmed Wednesday that the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group has taken up position in the Caribbean, arriving as relations between Washington and Havana reach a dangerous inflection point.
"The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the embarked Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), USS Gridley (DDG 101) and USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) are the epitome of readiness and presence, unmatched reach and lethality, and strategic advantage," U.S. Southern Command said in a statement posted on X.
The command further noted that the USS Nimitz "has proven its combat prowess across the globe, ensuring stability and defending democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf."
The carrier group's deployment coincides directly with the Trump administration's announcement of criminal charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro over his alleged involvement in the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft operated by Miami-based exile organization Brothers to the Rescue — an attack that claimed four lives, including three American citizens.
The naval movement carries unmistakable political weight. President Donald Trump has repeatedly declared that Cuba is "next" in the wake of the military operation against Iran, asserting that the communist-governed island would fall "soon."
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel pushed back forcefully earlier this week, insisting that Cuba holds the "absolute and legitimate right" to defend itself against any military assault and cautioning that such aggression would trigger "a bloodbath with incalculable consequences."
