Kremlin Calls Zelenskyy 'Main Obstacle' to Peace

(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov sharply rebuked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, declaring that reported Kyiv strike plans against Russia in June actively undermine prospects for a negotiated end to the conflict.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Peskov did not mince words in assigning blame for the stalled peace process.

"Again and again, we hear militant statements. These are not the kind of statements that would help create an atmosphere favorable to moving toward peace negotiations.

"This once again underscores and proves who is the main obstacle on the path toward a peaceful settlement. It is Zelenskyy and his regime," he said.

Despite the combative language, Peskov insisted Moscow retains a preference for diplomacy over confrontation, while warning that Russian forces would act decisively against any threats originating from Kyiv. "Moscow remains open to a peaceful path of settlement. It is the preferred option for us," he said.

On the sidelines of President Vladimir Putin's state visit to China, Peskov described the trip as progressing "very well," calling it "businesslike and substantive." He noted that an informal tea meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping was on the agenda — a longstanding tradition Xi maintains with foreign leaders that has evolved into a defining feature of Russia-China summits.

"There is nothing inherently exclusive about this, but it became an intrinsic attribute of meetings between Putin and Xi. They use it to discuss the most sensitive issues," he said.

Peskov confirmed that no press conference by Putin is planned following the China visit.

On the energy front, Peskov indicated that Moscow and Beijing have broadly aligned on the core parameters of the long-anticipated Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline — a proposed corridor designed to route Russian natural gas through Mongolia into China — though he acknowledged that a firm implementation timeline has yet to be established.
