Türkiye Honors Ataturk
(MENAFN) Türkiye on Tuesday commemorated the Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, a significant national event symbolizing the start of the country’s War of Independence.
May 19, 1919 marked the moment when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk — the founder of the Republic of Türkiye — traveled from Istanbul to the Black Sea province of Samsun to initiate the struggle that, four years afterward, led to the establishment of modern Türkiye.
Ataturk had been appointed Inspector General of the Ottoman Armies in Anatolia at a time when Istanbul, then serving as the capital of the Ottoman Empire, was occupied by Allied forces.
Defying directives issued by the Ottoman administration, he launched the resistance movement that eventually evolved into the War of Independence.
The historic date also held personal importance for Ataturk. When requested to state his exact birth date, he regarded May 19 as his birthday because it was the day he arrived in Samsun.
In 1938, Ataturk devoted May 19 to the youth of the Turkish nation under the name Youth and Sports Day. The public holiday is observed with official ceremonies and features young participants engaging in athletic and cultural events across the country.
Every year, young citizens mark the occasion by visiting Anitkabir, Ataturk’s mausoleum in Ankara, while also arranging various sports competitions and cultural programs.
In a statement posted on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended his congratulations to young people living both in Türkiye and overseas.
